About UMATR

In December of 2014, after a ten year study, Vermont joined the prestigious network of the National Wild & Scenic Rivers System when a congressional action designated 46.1 miles of Vermont rivers Wild & Scenic. Local communities and the Vermont congressional delegation worked for years to study these river reaches and show that their value deserved to be recognized on a national scale. The Upper Missisquoi and the Trout Rivers join other celebrated rivers which are preserved and safeguarded for their remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, and cultural values.

The Upper Missisquoi and Trout Rivers Wild & Scenic Committee is formed of local appointees and partner organizations.

The Committee's mission is to collaborate with partners and the communities along the rivers (Lowell, Westfield, Troy, Jay, North Troy, Richford, Montgomery, Berkshire, Enosburgh, and Enosburg Falls) to promote the rivers and support good river management.

The Committee uses the voluntary Management Plan as a road map to promote, protect, and enhance the rivers and their resources. Open meetings provide a regular and reliable forum for discussion, research, consensus-building, and action around river matters.

UMATR manages the federal funds provided through the National Park Service's Partnership Wild & Scenic Program. Annually, these funds are used to:

• Fund staff to manage the committee’s efforts

• Foster greater awareness of the value of our Wild & Scenic rivers

• Enhance access to local rivers

• Preserve and protect our rivers so that we may all continue to enjoy them
